Nirajan Rayamajhee

I was born in 1986 in Bhimkhori, a village beside the Roshi River. I started swimming in the Roshi from childhood, so rivers were already a natural part of my life.

The Sunkoshi was also close to my village. Whenever I visited Gajulidaha on the Sunkoshi, I would enthusiastically watch rafting boats and kayaks passing through. I was fascinated by them and often wondered how the rafts and kayaks were operated and how people could travel through such powerful water.

After completing my intermediate level in Kathmandu, I entered the white-water rafting industry in 2004. I started as a trainee and expedition helper and, in 2006, became a river guide.

Since then, I have guided and worked on many of Nepal’s major rivers, including the Upper Bhotekoshi, Sunkoshi, Karnali, Tamur, Kali Gandaki, Seti, Trishuli, Tamakoshi, Balephi and Bheri. I have also guided on Babai fishing-cum-rafting and Seti–Karnali fishing-cum-rafting expeditions.

My favourite is the Seti–Karnali because it offers a unique combination of tranquil water, fishing and exciting white water.

I particularly enjoy the multi-day fishing-cum-rafting expeditions. Spending several days on the river, combining angling with paddling and white-water, is one of my favourite ways to experience a river.

I believe Nepal has enormous potential as a white-water destination. We have the rivers and natural landscapes that people from around the world come to experience.

I believe the government should properly recognize, support and develop what nature has already given us while protecting our rivers.

With the right support and responsible development, I believe Nepal can become a true international destination for white-water adventure in the future.
